NIPS – Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening is an advanced and simple blood test used in the detection of fetal chromosomal aneuploidies that analyzes cell-free fetal DNA in the blood of a pregnant woman. Aneuploidy is the leading known genetic cause of miscarriages and congenital birth defects. The International Society for Prenatal Diagnosis (ISPD), The National Society of Genetic Counsellers (NSGC), The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG) and The Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) have all agreed that NIPS is a safe and effective screening test.
As per the recent ACOG guidelines released in August 2020, NIPS is now recommended for screening of all pregnancies irrespective of risk for foetal aneuploidy in high-risk pregnancies.
Notification to the consultant following receipt of the sample in the amount of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is too low
Given the high sensitivity of NIPS, patients with negative NIPS results should be counselled that the chance of aneuploidy for the chromosomes tested is low. However, a negative result does not completely rule out the possibility of trisomies 21, 18 and 13. NIPS results should be used in the context of all relevant clinica information.
