A treadmill test, also known as a stress test or exercise test, is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the functioning of the heart under stress, typically induced by exercise.
A treadmill test is conducted to evaluate heart function, particularly to diagnose heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and overall cardiovascular fitness.
Generally, treadmill tests are safe, but there are minimal risks such as potential for arrhythmias, chest pain, or heart attack, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. However, these risks are closely monitored by healthcare professionals.
The patient is connected to ECG electrodes, and baseline measurements of heart rate and blood pressure are taken. Then, they begin walking or running on the treadmill at a gradually increasing pace and incline while being monitored for any abnormal changes in heart rate or rhythm.
Treadmill tests are often recommended for individuals who have symptoms suggestive of heart disease, such as chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, palpitations, or those at risk due to factors like age, family history, or certain medical conditions.
Patients are typically advised to avoid eating or drinking anything (except water) for a few hours before the test. They may also be instructed to avoid certain medications or caffeinated beverages prior to the test, as they can affect heart rate.
The duration of a treadmill test varies but typically lasts around 10 to 15 minutes. However, it can be extended if necessary to observe the patient's response to exercise more thoroughly.
